A bequest—a gift in your will—is simple to arrange and you can create a legacy at McDonogh through a bequest without affecting your current financial situation.
A bequest can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. You can designate your bequest to be unrestricted, in which case the School will apply it to the area of greatest need as deemed by our Board of Trustees or to support a specific purpose. Your bequest can be used to establish a named endowment, presuming it meets our guidelines.
Residual Bequest Language
A residual bequest comes to McDonogh after your estate expenses and specific bequests are paid:
I give and devise to McDonogh School, located at 8600 McDonogh Road, Owings Mills, Maryland 21117, a 501(c)3 educational organization, all (or state a percentage) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program; however, if said program or fund are no longer viable, applicable, or in existence, then the bequest will support a school priority as determined by the Board of Trustees who will be mindful of the donor's original intent).
Specific Bequest Language
Naming McDonogh as a beneficiary of a specific amount from your estate:
I give and devise to McDonogh School, located at 8600 McDonogh Road, Owings Mills, Maryland 21117, a 501(c)3 educational organization, the sum of $___________ to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program; however, if said program or fund are no longer viable, applicable, or in existence, then the bequest will support a school priority as determined by the Board of Trustees who will be mindful of the donor's original intent).
Contingent Bequest Language
McDonogh can be named as a contingent beneficiary in your will or personal trust if one or more of your specific bequests cannot be fulfilled:
If (insert name) is not living or in existence at the time of my demise, I give and devise to McDonogh School, located at 8600 McDonogh Road, Owings Mills, Maryland 21117, a 501(c)3 educational organization, the sum of $ _______ (or all or a percentage of the residue of my estate) to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program; however, if said program or fund are no longer viable, applicable, or in existence, then the bequest will support a school priority as determined by the Board of Trustees who will be mindful of the donor's original intent).
